When it first becomes apparent that your engine isn’t firing up easily, you’ll want to have a mechanic take a look. By being proactive, you can prevent the problem from worsening to the point that your car won’t start at all and you find yourself stranded. At A-1 Automotive, our local mechanics are highly experienced with identifying and fixing problems that prevent engines from starting.
Common Reasons that Engines Won’t Start
Problems with the battery/charging system are often to blame for no-start. In some cases, batteries die due to alternator trouble. Symptoms of alternator failure include malfunctioning electrical accessories (such as power seats, power windows, radio), dimming/flickering headlights, and an illuminated dashboard warning light that reads GEN or ALT or is shaped like a small battery. However, there are several other reasons that batteries die, such as parasitic draws, old age, loose/corroded connections, and leaving headlights on.
Issues with fuel supply are also commonly the cause of no-start. A clogged fuel filter can prevent your engine from firing up if there isn’t enough fuel getting to the engine. By replacing your fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles, you can avoid this issue. Fuel pump trouble can also make it harder for your engine to fire up. Signs of fuel pump failure include sputtering, worsening gas mileage, and a whining sound emerging from your tank. Also, dirty fuel injectors can cause your engine to struggle to start. A fuel additive can be helpful with ridding contaminants from injectors and intake valves.
A bad starter is another common culprit when an engine won’t start. One sign of starter failure is that you turn the key and then get nothing but a clicking sound. A malfunctioning starter can also cause a grinding noise.
