Warning Signs of a Suspension Problem
Symptoms of suspension failure sometimes emerge while the brakes are engaged. With a bad suspension, it may feel like your car is nose-diving when you hit the brakes. Also, a faulty suspension can make your car take longer to arrive at a full stop after you’ve initiated the braking process.
A classic sign of suspension trouble is that your car bounces heavily whenever you drive over any little bump. If you hear clunking noises when going over bumps, then you’ve got a sign of a failing spring. You may also have a bad spring if you can see that your car is sitting lower in one corner.
To get a better idea of whether your suspension is in rough shape, you can do a quick test. For this test, make sure your car is securely parked on flat ground, then go to the front end, press down firmly on it, rock it two times, and then let go. After that, head to the back of the vehicle and repeat this process on the rear. Upon releasing, your vehicle shouldn’t rock on its own more than three times. However, if it does, then your suspension should be inspected by a mechanic.
It’s good to be familiar with a few other common indications of a suspension issue. One is that your car feels like it’s drifting/swaying when you go around sharp corners. Another is that you can see oil leaking out onto your shocks, which likely means you’re due for replacement. Also, bald spots on your tires could mean that a faulty suspension is causing tire tread to wear down unevenly.
